Common Things Our Clients Say At The Start Of Therapy
If you are questioning if you should seek professional help because you feel anxious, ask yourself the following questions:
- “Do I fear judgment from others and avoid public speaking?”
- “Am I struggling to connect with my partner or others?”
- “Is my fear of public speaking excessive?”
- “Do I refrain from asking questions in class or in meetings out of fear of being the center of attention?”
- “Am I avoiding important conversations because it makes me anxious?”
- “Is it easier to avoid resolving conflict because confront it makes me physically ill?
- You might think to yourself I can’t turn my thoughts off – we often like to think of your anxious thoughts as the hamster wheel in your head that you can’t get off of.
Maybe you might be feeling some of these physical anxiety symptoms
- Quickness/shortness of breath
- Telling yourself, “My headache, pounding heart and shortness of breath are normal. I feel this way all the time!”
“Is that anxiety, or am I having a heart attack?!” These are only a few questions to ask yourself. If you can relate, then you may be struggling to manage an anxiety disorder effectively. It’s exhausting to sit with the discomfort of anxiety attacks & panic attacks. Many of our clients find that unmanaged anxiety affects their life by causing isolation, an inability to connect with others, and an inability to maintain relationships. You’re most likely extremely shy and very afraid you’re being watched and judged. Anxiety disorders can disrupt your work or school life and impact your overall physical and mental well-being. Physically you may feel depressed, have digestive issues, chronic pain, experience trouble sleeping, irritability & substance misuse to cope. Without proper coping skills, you may turn to unhealthy behaviors to “calm your nerves.” Unhealthy coping becomes a pattern of behavior that disrupts you professionally, academically, and socially.

Living Life Outside of The Control of Anxiety
If you are wondering how therapy and help, just imagine being able to speak to your boss about a raise without feeling anxious. Imagine being able to stand in front of your classmates, giving a speech, without feeling faint. Imagine accepting an invitation to that party you were invited to without hesitation. Imagine that if when you recognize feeling anxious, that you stop it in its tracks because you sought anxiety help & because you have the necessary skills to reduce the signs and symptoms that would ordinarily be debilitating. You may be saying, “Yeah, but I’m able to deal with it. No one can tell I struggle with anxiety.” That is probably true–but YOU know you struggle with anxiety. Over time, it takes a toll on you physically and mentally. Our clients tell us that therapy helps by changing the way they view anxiety attacks & panic attacks & improves their ability to cope. What Keeps You Stuck
If you are reading this, then most likely you are suffering from anxiety, or you are looking to help someone you care about deal with their anxiety. Here are some of the common reasons why our past clients put off anxiety – and what finally changed their minds.
You are afraid that you will l be perceived as weak or even worse “crazy.”
Chances are you can relate to these reasons and think you shouldn’t make the call today. Still, as you become more empowered and knowledgeable about therapy, you can help break the stigma by sharing your experience with trusted friends and relatives. Most of our clients start off in therapy, saying something is wrong with them, yet with time they learn how to manage their anxiety, they can see nothing is wrong at all. The crazy thing to do is to actually not live your life you want to live because your anxiety is so bad. It’s crazy to let your anxiety negatively impact relationships, to keep you from getting the promotion at work, or to keep you stuck in your house.
Cultural & Family Issues = a lack of support
If you lack support, a good rapport with a therapist is an excellent source of support. We can also help you gain the tools necessary to communicate your needs to your family. If your family uses shame, guilt, and especially uses your anxiety issues against you, then learning how to navigate these issues in a safe way (therapy) will help. Our clients learn to rely more on those who are supportive and learn to set boundaries with family and friends who show a lack of support.
Therapy is too expensive
Some therapists have incredibly high rates, which is why at Richer Life Counseling, we offer discount packages. You can look at therapy as expensive or as an investment. Some therapists have incredibly high rates, which is why at Richer Life Counseling, we offer discount packages. One question to ask yourself is, how much is your anxiety costing you now? Did you miss out on your dream job, are you too anxious to spend quality time with your family? Uncontrollable anxiety can cost a lot more of your life than the cost of investing in yourself to overcome your anxiety.
“I don’t have time to go to therapy.”
Time: yes–time is precious but so are you. Your health, both physical and mental, is essential. When you’re on an airplane, it’s explained that if there’s a change in the cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will dropdown. You’re instructed to place the oxygen mask on yourself before applying it to others, like your children. The same concept applies to therapy. Therapy is like using oxygen to yourself first so that you can be there for others. Therapy is also about self-care, and self-care is not a selfish act.
“I’m not sure my information is kept confidential.“
Everything you said in therapy is confidential. We strongly believe that you must feel you trust in your therapist for us to build a healthy counseling relationship. Confidentiality is key to making that relationship. However, therapists are bound by law to report the following:
- If you threaten to harm yourself
- If you threaten to harm someone else
- Suspected child or elder abuse (past or present) – if you are a victim or perpetrator.
- By court order
- If you sign a Release of Information
Therapy is about hearing your own voice, and your therapist ensures that your story stays in the office. This is why at Richer Life Counseling, we have a social media policy that helps you keep your story confidential. Sometimes when our clients worry about confidentiality, what they are apprehensive about is a judgment from the therapist. Luckily, we pride ourselves on creating a safe judgment-free zone for you to explore yourself and your anxiety in a way that leads to lasting change.
