I love reading books that help inspire me, challenge me and change me. I struggle to find books that are helpful and not just the feel-good self-help type of book. Working with my clients I will recommend books that offer more than just a feel-good solution. That is why I do a bi-weekly blog post on books that are helpful to read. This week’s book review of
Review of Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love by Dr. Sue Johnson
Dr. Sue Johnson is the founder of what is called Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT focused on understanding how we connect with other people (attachment) and look at the underlying emotional need. Dr. Johnson shares how we connect to our partners (attachment) and how that affects our emotions. Our emotions, in turn, affect our relationship. This book can help any couple who is looking to break down the walls of disconnection, and build great emotional intimacy.
- Good parts of the book – – This book shows how couples talk to each other. You can learn about the underlying emotions that drive disconnection and connection.
- Not so good parts of the book – While this book has great information, the biggest problem is readability. The book can come across as slightly boring and this might take away from the underlying message.
Chapter Breakdown
The book is broken up into parts. Each part covers a very different aspect of connection.
Part 1 – How emotions and attachment affect our current relationship. Along with the history of where EFT comes from and how it can be helpful in repairing relationships.
Part 2 – Is made up of the 7 types of conversation that are critical to EFT. Each subsection helps you understand your relationship patterns, and how to create new ways of connecting to each other.
Part 3 – Address what it requires to build a strong, lasting relationship.
Who This Book Helps
If you are part of a relationship and are starting to feel disconnect this book can help. No matter if you are in a new relationship or have been married for years. EFT can help you reconnect and form a stronger relationship with your partner.
